Kim Kardashian! Will and Jada! Demi and Ashton! Ali and Roberto! Every celebrity couple ever who's ever had problems!
Good god, I know it's good for SEO or whatever, but can the experts please stop drawing shaky lines from these couples to whatever flawed moral argument they're trying to push? (And when I say "experts," I mean that a bunch of these people actually have extra letters after their names. I'm assuming that's not a typo, or an indication that their cat walked across the keyboard in an attempt to, you know, just be an asshole, like cats are wont to do.)
I mean, I'm probably more exposed to it than most, what with Google alerts pouring into my inbox once a day. However, if I see one more article about the speculation of splendidly follicled Robert Pattinson musing that the only way Edward and Bella's relationship would fail would be through divorce, I'm totes gonna voms all over your Twilight box set.
Here's the thing...I get that our culture is a little obsessed with celebrity whatnot. And I get that it's a little bit (okay, a lot) like high school, where everyone kind of pretends not to care (but really, really does) about the popular kids and who they're screwing, and either hoping that they ones they love to hate fail, and the ones they love to love succeed.
But it doesn't really help anyone for an expert to come in and say, "Oh, this celebrity marriage is falling apart, so it's clearly a really good idea to make all kinds of arguments why maybe open marriages don't work, even though there is no proof whatsoever that this was actually happening in this situation. BUT I'M AN EXPERT AND ABSOLUTELY DO NOT ASK FOR ANY BACKING SUPPORT TO WHAT I SAY."
I guess we're not all immune. We can all make arguments that don't really gel from time to time (I'm sure I do it a metric fuck-ton. Don't mind that that's a Canadian measurement. Also, I'm not an expert. Those letters after my name are from the cat walking on the keyboard)...but with the amount of BAD advice and BAD information out there about dating and relationships, well, bleh. I feel like those who at least purport to be experts maybe have a little responsibility to make actual sense out of all the madness.
My two cents.
